Over the summer, a significant academic report was published in Nature Medicine by Dr. Al-Aly and his team from Washington University. This report delved into the science, research, and policy surrounding long COVID and made several recommendations, some of which are directly relevant to our Department of Social Protection.
One of the key points from the report is the need for a more adaptive and flexible approach to support long COVID patients, enabling them to return to the workforce. This is crucial because, as we know, recovery rates for long COVID are alarmingly low even after one year.
During question time in Dáil Éireann this week, I raised this issue with Minister Heather Humphreys. I highlighted the importance of streamlining the disability allowance and illness benefit processes for those suffering from long COVID. Currently, while there are various schemes available, it would be far more efficient if the Department’s website clearly outlined the options for long COVID patients. This would prevent individuals from having to piece together information themselves, which can be a daunting task when dealing with a chronic illness.
Moreover, I emphasised the need for workplace policies that support individuals with long COVID. These should include flexible working hours, increased breaks to allow for pacing, the option for remote work, and comprehensive sick leave policies. It’s essential that the Minister leads by example and encourages employers to adopt these flexible approaches.
Minister Humphreys acknowledged the issue and noted that the Department continues to provide a suite of income supports to those who cannot work due to illness or disability, including long COVID. However, she agreed that promoting schemes like the partial capacity benefit more effectively could help those whose ability to work is reduced due to medical conditions.
In conclusion, while there are existing supports, we need a more coordinated strategy to address the challenges faced by long COVID patients. By streamlining processes and promoting flexible workplace policies, we can help these individuals reintegrate into the workforce and lead fulfilling lives.
